Clothing For All! - Gender Neutral Maternity Clothing

Maternity clothes. They’re an essential part of every pregnancy. The body is changing so much on a daily basis, and that includes physically. Eventually, you step into your never-fail pair of denim jeans and they won’t button. Your shirts start working extra hard to cover that baby bump that seemed to pop up overnight.

As you head into the homestretch, it’s not just the bump that needs a new wardrobe. Swollen ankles, enlarged breasts - there’s a reason the very pregnant usually just don a sundress and call it a day. However, if a flowery, flowy sundress or stretchy, skin-tight leggings are not in your wardrobe, you may feel resigned to a closet full of sweatpants and baggy t-shirts.

While our culture has taken steps toward inclusivity in many ways, it can be hard to find non-binary, masculine, or plus-sized maternity clothing that looks and feels good to the wearer.

Below, we at Beautiful Births and Beyond have compiled a few different options for non-traditional maternity pieces. It’s important during this often physically uncomfortable time that you are feeling as comfortable as possible in your clothing!

This durable, neutral light jacket goes up to an XXL and has a loose fit, flared hem, and masculine details like lots of pockets and copper button fasteners. Add a mock collar and you’re good to go! Bonus - since it unbuttons, it can be worn open over your bump once baby reaches the later stages of pregnancy!

Another button-down option available up to XXL, this shirt has split sides, long tails in the front and back, and a loose yet tailored fit that’s spot on. Available in this nifty rust orange, or for a more feminine flair with a masculine frame, check out their floral and pink options!

If floral prints or shirts with layers of flowy fabric aren’t your style, try a neutral tank top under a flannel or open button-down shirt to accommodate that bump. Regular t-shirts may fit the bill sometimes, although often in order to size correctly for your baby belly, the rest of the t-shirt ends up baggy and saggy in all the wrong places.

These tanks fit snug yet modestly up top while still allowing for plenty of expanding room for the bump, thanks to the ruching and shirring at the sides. There’s nothing wrong with throwing on an old band t-shirt, of course, but when you want to feel a little more put-together, try one of these tanks on for size!

Three Seasons Maternity Women's Maternity Bootcut Denim with Neutral Belly Band

One of the trickiest pieces of maternity clothing for our non-binary and gender non-conforming clients to find are pants. However, maternity pants that aren’t leggings of some sort are difficult to find as well. Pregnant folks are resigned to high waisted, super stretchy leggings, sweats, or ill-fitting maternity jeans. Proper bump support during pregnancy can help with all-around comfort, and if you can’t find a pair of maternity pants that fits you properly, you’re potentially in for a lot of discomfort!

These Three Seasons Maternity Bootcut Denim pants are available up to an XXL, are made of a super stretchy material, and have a neutral tone belly band to help cradle that bump. Their loose fit and stone wash give a masculine vibe, and are perfect for the pregnant person who doesn’t want a skin-tight pair of pants when that’s not normally their style.

The most important thing to remember when you’re styling yourself during your pregnancy is: it’s your style and your comfort. You do not need to compromise your personal expression in order to be comfortable - while it may be more difficult to find, there are options out there. Get creative, explore, and try different pieces out! Eventually, you will find maternity clothing that works for you and your style!
