Staying Cool and Safe: Summer Tips for Pregnant Folks

Summer is nearly officially upon us (for those in the Northern hemisphere!), and while it's a great time for BBQs, beach days, and basking in the sunshine, it's also a season that requires some extra TLC, especially for those who are pregnant. If you're expecting, it's crucial to take extra steps to stay hydrated, protect your skin, and be mindful of the heat. Let’s explore how we can beat the heat safely and effectively this summer!

Hydration: Your Summer Superpower

First things first: hydration. Water is your best friend, especially when you're pregnant. During pregnancy, your body needs more water to support the increased blood volume, amniotic fluid, and your growing baby. When temperatures rise, your body loses more water through sweat, making it even more essential to keep your water intake up.

Here are a few tips to stay hydrated:

  • Carry a water bottle: Keep it with you at all times and take sips regularly. Find a water bottle that you like, whether it’s because of the shape, what it’s made of, decorated with stickers, bedazzled, etc. - if you find a water bottle that you like that’s easy to carry with you, you’ll be more likely to stay hydrated!

  • Infuse your water: Add some fresh fruit or cucumber slices to your water for a refreshing twist! Check with your medical provider before adding any additional hydration or flavor packs (for example, flavored drink powders) to make sure it’s safe for you and baby!

  • Eat hydrating foods: Fruits like watermelon, oranges, and strawberries are not only delicious but also help keep you hydrated. Coconut water is another excellent way to hydrate while switching up  your beverage choices!

Sun Safety: Sunscreen and Smart Clothing

We all love a good dose of Vitamin D, but too much sun can be harmful, especially during pregnancy. Your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy, so it’s essential to protect it from harmful UV rays.

  • Sunscreen is a must: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Make sure to reapply every two hours, or more often if you're swimming or sweating.

  • Cover up: Light, breathable clothing can keep you cool and protect your skin. Think wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts, and sunglasses. Not only will this keep you safe, but you'll look super stylish too!

  • Stay in the shade: When you’re socializing, try and stick to shady areas of the outdoor event. If there’s no shade to be found, make sure you can take breaks under cover every now and then. Breaks out of the direct sun will help keep you safe and able to keep partying on!

The Risks of Heat and Sun

Now, let’s talk about why these precautions are so important. High temperatures and direct sun exposure can pose risks for pregnant individuals, such as:

  • Dehydration: As we mentioned, your body needs more water now. Dehydration can lead to dizziness, headaches, nausea, and even preterm labor in severe cases.

  • Heat exhaustion and heat stroke: Pregnant people are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Symptoms include nausea, fainting, and rapid heartbeat. If you start feeling these symptoms, it's crucial to cool down and hydrate immediately. If symptoms persist, definitely seek medical attention as soon as possible.

  • Sunburn: Your skin is more prone to burning during pregnancy. Not only is sunburn painful, but it can also lead to more serious issues like skin cancer. Plus, the last thing you want is to be dealing with uncomfortable, burned skin when you’re already pregnant!

Tips to Beat the Heat

  • Stay indoors during peak hours: The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you can, plan your outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon. This gives you the least direct sunlight, and the least exposure to UV rays during the day.

  • Cool showers: Taking a cool shower can help lower your body temperature and provide instant relief from the heat. It can also help you sleep more soundly if you’ve been hot and sticky all day!

  • Just keep swimming: Finding a local swimming hole, visiting a swimming pool, or taking a dip in a pond or the ocean can help beat the heat! Pro tip: bring a lawn chair into the water if it’s shallow and calm, and let nature be your AC while you chill!

Summer is a wonderful time, and being pregnant shouldn't stop you from enjoying it. With a few mindful steps, you can stay safe and comfortable. Remember to drink plenty of water, protect your skin with sunscreen and smart clothing, and be aware of the risks that come with the summer sun.

Take care of yourself (and your growing little one), and have a fantastic summer!
